職場で「日本ではひとつ2時間の会議が日中びっちりはいっていて、残業時間にならないと仕事をこなす時間がなかった。だから夜遅くまで毎日残業するんだ。」という話をしたら、まったく信じてくれなかった。
そうか、信じられるわけないわなあ、と思っていると、一人のKiwi「そうらしいね。前付き合っていた日本人の彼女が同じこと言ってた。」とフォロー。
そこから矢継ぎ早に質問が飛ぶ。

Kiwi1「2時間も何を話ししてるんだ？」
私「暇だから、メールチェックをしてたよ。一言もしゃべらないで寝てるやつも会議に結構でてたし。その場にいるのが重要というか。」

Kiwi2「そんなにいくつも会議を何のためにやるんだ?」
私「上司へのトレーニングみたいなものかな。あるいは上司の思いつきの雑談を聞いてる。それ以外は決定権のない人間だけでブレストやってるみたいな感じ。それが最終的に総意を得るまでのプロセスとして必要みたいだ。」

Kiwi3「誰もおかしいといわないのか？」
私「思ってる人もいるけど、大部分はそんなもんかなあと諦めているのかな。それが仕事だと思ってるし。」

Kiwi4「そんなことのために毎日残業してたら、一体何のために生きてるんだ？」
私「残念ながらそれが分からなかった。分からなかったから脱出してきた。」
